Overview

The problem at hand involves improving the audio system within Cross City's Chapel, a space that has to offer flexibility as it is used weekly for a traditional worship service which has a 40-member choir and an orchestra with about 8-12 members, as well as our Español worship service which is modern, with a 4-piece band and praise team. The Chapel is also their primary venue for weddings and funerals.

Limitations

  1. Inability to alter the existing stage or install permanent front-fill speakers due to structural constraints.
  2. Acoustic treatment cannot be applied to the wooden ceiling to maintain the room’s visual appeal. On either side of the congregational seating are parallel walls with no acoustic treatment, and behind the seating is a brick wall with no acoustic treatment.

The Solution

Our primary focus for this project was to achieve comprehensive balanced PA coverage enhancing the intelligibility of spoken word while leaving the room live enough to handle acoustic instruments without the need for amplification. We accomplished this hanging stereo A series arrays by L-Acoustics, along with LA4X amplifiers, A series outfills, flown KS21 Subwoofers, and X12 choir monitors. We also installed a DSP by Q-SYS with a custom touch-screen user-control interface for power sequencing, amplifier monitoring and basic FoH control.

Achievements

  1. Upgrading the PA system for comprehensive, balanced coverage.
  2. Implementing acoustic treatment to improve intelligibility while preserving the room's aesthetics.
  3. Replacing the existing amplifier rack.
  4. Updating stage floor wedge monitor amplifiers and integrating them into DSP processing.
  5. Installing a power sequencer with key switch control for the amp rack and also front of house.

Testimonial

"Our church was in the market for a new sound system for our chapel. Their proposal was unique because they listened to every request we had and stayed within budget. We had absolutely NO revisions! They were incredibly clean and meticulous, efficient with their time, and got the job done ahead of schedule. I would absolutely consider Nathan and the FM team for any of our future technology upgrades."
